A Short but Rewarding Ascent to Serra de Cume from Lajes

The next hikes to this location are on 20th and 27th of August.

Panoramic views and a steady climb on Terceira Island

If you’re looking for a manageable hike with an exceptional payoff, the route from Lajes to Serra de Cume and back is a perfect choice. This trail, taking approximately 4 to 5 hours round trip, offers a great balance between accessibility and adventure.

🚶‍♀️ What to Expect

This route represents the second half of the full Relheiras de São Brás to Serra de Cume hike which we previously covered here. Starting in the quiet village of Lajes, you’ll gradually ascend to one of the most iconic viewpoints on the island: Serra de Cume.

Though the climb can be steep at times, the route is entirely on paved or cobblestone roads, making it technically easy even for less experienced hikers. We rate this trail as “moderate” solely due to the elevation gain — but with a relaxed pace and a few short breaks, it’s very doable.

⛰️ Why Hike This Trail?

  • Sweeping views over the island’s patchwork of green fields — often called the “manta de retalhos” (patchwork quilt)
  • A quiet and uncrowded path, perfect for peaceful walking
  • Opportunity to experience the ascent to Serra de Cume without committing to a full-day hike
