Biscoitos – Miradouro Quatro Ribeiras – Baías da Agualva

If you’re craving a hike that combines forest trails, panoramic ocean views, and that exhilarating “end-of-the-world” feeling — this one is for you.

This 19–20 km route is a challenging but rewarding journey across two very different landscapes. The first part of the trail — my own original creation — takes you from the village of Biscoitos up to Miradouro Quatro Ribeiras, a viewpoint nestled at the base of Pico Alto. From there, the trail descends to the cliffs of Baías da Agualva, where the Atlantic roars beneath your feet.

Part 1: Forest Climb & Volcanic Views

The hike begins in Biscoitos with a steady ascent on a forest road lined with cryptomeria trees and mossy stone walls. As you gain altitude, the air cools and the forest grows quieter — broken only by birdsong and the crunch of your steps.

Eventually, you’ll reach Miradouro Quatro Ribeiras, a scenic lookout with sweeping views toward the coast. This is a great place for a water break and a photo stop.

(Note: there are no trail signs — this path isn’t officially marked, so GPS or local guidance is a must especially to go down 😁.)

Part 2: Downhill to the Cliffs

From the miradouro, you descend toward Quatro Ribeiras, where the terrain gets steeper and rockier. Wear sturdy hiking boots — in rainy weather, the trail down can be slippery.

Once in the village, follow the path to Baías da Agualva, a short but spectacular coastal trail with jagged cliffs, crashing waves, and that wild Azorean energy. You’ll walk along ancient lava formations, lush vegetation, and views that stretch endlessly over the ocean.

This section is officially marked and more popular — name of the trail is Baías da Agualva.
