Hiking Monte Brasil: Breathtaking Views and Furry Friends

If you’re visiting Terceira and only have time for one hike — make it Monte Brasil. This iconic volcano-turned-peninsula offers an unforgettable combination of scenic ocean views, lush forest paths, and… a colony of friendly cats.

Trail Overview

  • Route: Monte Brasil Trail (PRC4TER)
  • Distance: ~7.5 km (loop)
  • Duration: 2–3 hours
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate
  • Starting Point: Near the fortress of São João Baptista
  • Highlights: Panoramic viewpoints, historic military ruins, forest paths, and lots of cats

Monte Brasil rises from the ocean right next to the island’s capital, Angra do Heroísmo. The trail takes you through different landscapes — from eucalyptus-lined roads to coastal cliffs — and offers panoramic views over Angra, the coastline, and the neighboring islets.

A Bit of History

Monte Brasil was formed approximately 23,000 years ago as a result of a submarine volcanic eruption. As lava met the seawater, it created what’s known as a tuff cone, building up layer by layer until it emerged above the ocean surface. Over the centuries, erosion and vegetation have softened its rugged volcanic origin, turning it into the green, walkable peninsula we see today.

Later, Monte Brasil became a strategic military site, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. The impressive Fortress of São João Baptista, one of the largest fortifications built by the Spanish in the Azores, still guards the entrance to the trail.

The Real Stars: Monte Brasil’s Cat Colony

One of the most unique and heartwarming parts of this trail is the cat colony that lives on the peninsula. Cared for by a local group of volunteers, the cats have access to food, shelter, and medical care — and seem to know it! Most of them are incredibly friendly and will happily approach hikers for cuddles or to politely ask for snacks (which you are not allowed to give according to the sign near the colony).

The colony is located in a quiet clearing along the trail, near one of the old military structures. It’s not uncommon to be surrounded by a dozen purring cats, all lounging in the sun, playing in the grass, or rubbing up against your legs. It’s a peaceful, unexpected encounter that makes this trail truly memorable.

Cat in Monte Brasil

Getting There from Praia da Vitória

📍 If you are located in Angra , Monte Brasil is in a walk distance awaliability.

Or you can take the bus #2 from Praia da Vitoria which is availible almost hourly except Sunday (it is still availible but less time options).

You can also rent a car or take a taxi, which gives you flexibility for exploring Monte Brasil and nearby spots in Angra.

Tips for the Trail

  • Bring water and wear sturdy shoes — some parts of the trail are uneven or steep.
  • Allow extra time for cat-cuddling breaks (trust me, you’ll want them).
  • Avoid feeding the cats, they are supposed to be hunters — and don’t worry, they’re well taken care of.
  • The trail is accessible year-round and well-marked.

Monte Brasil isn’t just a hike — it’s a full experience. History, nature, and animal lovers alike will find something to fall in love with here. Whether you’re climbing to the top for the view or sitting on a stone bench with a cat in your lap, Monte Brasil offers the kind of quiet magic that stays with you long after you’ve left the island.
